The photographs, which are now being shown to an audience outside of the USA for the first time, have been stored in the photographer's archive for 30 years. These photographic documents are outstanding and historically significant. Chloe Sherman's exhibition RENEGADES. San Francisco: Queer Life in the 1990's captures the rebellious spirit of the time and candidly portrays a forward-looking era.

For queer life, San Francisco was the hotspot of the Western world in the 1990s.
Young people, artists and free spirits came to the city to be free and to organize their lives independently from mainstream society, to experiment with art, style, gender and identity.

The young photographer Chloe Sherman also enjoyed life in the West Coast metropolis, which is famous for its openness.
With the differentiated view of an insider, her photographs document a developing community that rebelled against the prevailing cultural norms and developed its own rules for dealing with common gender attributions and social coexistence.

  • The exhibition was curated by Nadine Barth and Katharina Mouratidi.
