Opening

Opening of the special exhibition at the Ephraim-Palais Museum on migrant housing, exploring the tension between self-expression and external perception.

The exhibition “A Change of Scenery – Migration and Furniture since 1960” explores housing in a society of migration through the lens of aesthetic and social issues.

Migration always also means: furnishing a room, setting up a table, hanging a curtain—and thus creating a home in a foreign land.

Is there a visual history of migrant living that balances self-expression and external perception? Are there recurring objects and designs? Through an essayistic, polyphonic, and fragmentary narrative style, the exhibition brings together photographs, objects, and documents, artistic works, and literary voices. The focus is on Berlin, while also looking at other places of migration in Germany.
