Cinema Surreal

H. P. Lovecraft is the author of the short story *The Call of Cthulhu*. Born in 1890, he began writing horror stories in the 1920s. Lovecraft remained unknown throughout his lifetime; it was only after his death in 1937 that people began to take an interest in him.

The H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society was founded in 1984. In 2005, it produced the film *The Call of Cthulhu*, based on Lovecraft’s most famous short story. To remain true to the author’s atmosphere, it was decided to make a silent film in the original format of the 1920s.

The anthropologist Thurston discovers documents in his great-uncle’s estate concerning a strange cult, the Cult of Cthulhu. Cthulhu, it is said, ruled the Earth eons ago and has since lain in a death-like slumber, whilst the cult’s followers await his resurrection. On 28 February 1925, a severe earthquake is said to have raised the city of R’lyeh, which had been submerged in the Pacific Ocean, to the surface. A captain named Johansen is said to have entered the city, where the laws of physics no longer applied, and inadvertently reawakened Cthulhu. Shortly afterwards, the city is said to have sunk back into the Pacific during a violent storm, and Cthulhu is said to have fallen back into slumber. But all over the world, the cult’s followers have banded together and are rampaging across the land.
