The Hohenzollern Gallery at the Grunewald Hunting Lodge
As early as the 16th century, Margrave Georg Friedrich had been collecting portraits of family members at Plassenburg Castle. After his death in 1603, Margrave Christian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth—a younger son of the Brandenburg Elector Johann Georg—founded the younger Brandenburg-Bayreuth line and expanded the collection of paintings. His brother Joachim Ernst inherited the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach that same year.
The tour led by Kathrin Külow, head of the castle complex, provides an overview of the portrait gallery currently on display at the Grunewald Hunting Lodge, which features portraits from the 16th to the 19th century, brief information about the subjects, and insights into the evolution of princely portraiture.
