Labyrinth: Works by Boulez, Pintscher, and Widmann

For Jörg Widmann, the idea of the labyrinth has become a lifelong theme, both philosophically and in his compositions. To date, seven of his works bear this title. The most recent one will be performed in June during the season’s closing concert.

He conceived *Labyrinth IV*, which tells the story of the mythical Minotaur from the perspective of his half-sister Ariadne, specifically for the Pierre Boulez Saal “with its labyrinthine possibilities.

“The fact that the singer can wander around the space is what made the piece possible in the first place.” The work was premiered here in 2019 by Daniel Barenboim and the Boulez Ensemble.

That same year, Matthias Pintscher conducted the premiere of his piano concerto *NUR* at the same venue. Both compositions can now be heard once again under Pintscher’s baton. The program is rounded out by the *Sonatine* composed in 1946 by the young Pierre Boulez.
