Celebrating 10 Years: Octets by Schubert and Widmann
It has been ten years since the Pierre Boulez Saal first opened its doors in March 2017! We are celebrating our anniversary with musicians and music that have played a decisive role in shaping the hall’s artistic identity over the past decade. The octets by Franz Schubert and Jörg Widmann were first performed during the Pierre Boulez Saal’s opening season.
There are 180 years of music history between these two compositions, which premiered in 1824 and 2004, respectively, and yet they have far more in common than just their instrumentation for clarinet, bassoon, horn, and strings—Widmann’s score was, after all, composed in direct dialogue with its historical model. For this anniversary, it’s time for another side-by-side comparison.
