Nature as a mirror of the soul: Star baritone Christian Gerhaher performs two rich, melancholic vocal scenes that illustrate this interplay.

First, baritone Christian Gerhaher performs “Der Einsame im Herbst” from Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde,” and second, in a wonderful discovery of Alphons Diepenbrock, whom Mahler held in high esteem.

You will hear his orchestral song “Im großen Schweigen,” in which a person by the sea reflects on the limits of language and thought. In his “Great” Symphony in C major, Franz Schubert ignites the entire emotional spectrum of Romanticism, from exuberant joy to deep despair.

Markus Poschner makes his debut conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.
