The Missa solemnis is one of Beethoven’s most personal works—a passionate declaration of faith and, at the same time, of humanity.

The Missa solemnis unites the traditions of church music, yet in its monumental form it reaches far beyond them. Hymnal, dramatic, then quiet and contemplative again, Beethoven interprets the sacred text musically—from the first solemn Kyrie calls to the final, urgent plea for peace, which is repeatedly threatened by the ominous sounds of war.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic will perform Beethoven’s Missa solemnis as part of the “Signs and Wonders” biennial.
