Two powerful works from contrasting worlds: Light-footed, elegant, full of wit and Spanish rhythms, Manuel de Falla’s ballet *The Three-Cornered Hat* tells the story of a young wife who fends off the advances of the royal governor.
Leoš Janáček’s rhapsody *Taras Bulba*, by contrast, depicts with archaic force the fate of a Ukrainian Cossack leader who, in the fight against Polish occupiers, first loses both his sons and then his own life.
Sir Simon Rattle, former chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, will also conduct the world premiere of a concerto written by Cathy Milliken for English hornist Dominik Wollenweber.
