‘Degenerate Art‘ in the Bomb Rubble
Brought together by fate and marked by abuse and destruction, the ‘Berlin Sculpture Find’ has become a globally recognised symbol that, more powerfully than many intact works of art, illustrates the persecution of modern art by the Nazi dictatorship.
- But why were these works of classical modernism considered ‘degenerate art’?
- How were they displayed at the propaganda exhibition of the same name in Munich in 1937?
- Who were the artists?
The guided tour sheds light on this history and the discovery of the sculptures during excavations in Berlin-Mitte in 2010. The participants get up close to the sculptures, see what can be repaired through restoration, but also how much has been lost in the bomb rubble.
