On 15 January 1974, a hospital bed in East Berlin's Charite is engulfed in flames. The patient who dies in the fire caused by a cigarette is an old Danish communist: Ruth Berlau.

Ruth Berlau had been Bertolt Brecht's lover since his Danish exile. Born on 24 August 1906, she grew up in a merchant's family. At 13 she becomes pregnant. She has an abortion. After her mother's suicide attempt, she leaves school. Sells coffee at doorsteps and wants to become a "re-corder". She travels to Paris by bike and becomes famous for her reports. The texts - freely invented. She marries a doctor at a young age and becomes an actress. Founds a theatre at 24. She works with Brecht on The Caucasian Chalk Circle. She teaches herself photography. Has and loses a son by Brecht. Photographs Brecht's works. Invents the model books. She does not submit to Brecht's laws. She is ordered to return to Denmark. Her hunger for life is insatiable. Brecht dies. Berlau remains.

The hybrid-immersive production combines virtual reality with the live play of three protagonists. Equipped with a pair of VR-goggles, the spectators individually enter a scenic installation, coming very close to Ruth Berlau and Bertolt Brecht, both live and in the virtual realm.

The RAUM+ZEIT collective explores the scope of the new digital medium in performing arts. Reality and identity, the self and the other are called into question.
