In Martinique, a wake is not a sad occasion. Wakes are celebrated as festivities, gatherings and parties. Where the kontè tells his stories outside, whilst the mourners sing and pray inside, keeping the departed awake because their lives were worth the journey.

What if a joint wake were held for the Nardal sisters? A polyphonic procession in Creole, English and perhaps French too, at the crossroads of a poetic memorial service, a funeral with a collaborative choir and a street parade – the ‘carnival vidé’.

“Let’s go for a walk, have a chat, sing, dance and have a drink.

Let’s remember Paulette, Émilie, Alice, Jane, Cécile, Lucie and Andrée, and let’s not forget that whilst their time was not our own, their voices still echo today.

What if we all became Nardalists together!
