With 36 MELODY, the dance battle – part of the ‘Welcome to Kreuzberg!’ festival day – draws on Kreuzberg’s hip-hop culture of the 1980s and 1990s. The event takes its name from the song ‘My Melody’ by the pioneering Kreuzberg hip-hop group Islamic Force, which played a key role in shaping the district’s early hip-hop scene.

Kadir AMIGO Memiş beim Battle of the Year 1995
Under the artistic direction of Kadir AMIGO Memiş – a Kreuzberg-based dancer and choreographer who danced at the Naunynritze himself and later co-founded the Flying Steps Academy and the Funkin’ Stylez Festival – the event brings a ‘7 to Smoke All Styles Battle’ (a tournament format in which seven consecutive duels must be won) and a Junior Battle to the Gropius Bau.
Organised by Merve Ayan, a key figure in Berlin’s urban dance community, the event brings together dancers of different generations and styles. They compete against one another and celebrate the diversity of a culture that originated in Kreuzberg and lives on to this day.
