Around the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin wants to celebrate our democracy, freedom and diversity together with the citizens from 1 to 3 October. One million guests from Berlin, Germany and our neighbouring countries are expected to attend a citizens' festival.
Alone, German unity would never have been possible. It was the many courageous citizens who took to the streets together in autumn 1989 that brought down the Berlin Wall in a peaceful revolution. It was our European neighbours and international friends who then cleared the way for reunification.
And it is all of us who have lived and driven this unity since then, in Germany, Europe and the world.Meanwhile, after more than 25 years as a community of 16 federal states, as a country in Europe, as a partner in the world, we have become accustomed to this unity and freedom gained at that time. But there is no guarantee at all. Rather, what has been achieved must be defended again and again.
Our history shows that it is the community that really makes us strong. It is the cohesion that breaks down walls. And it is mutual trust that allows us not only to strive for new shores, but also to reach them.
In 2018, German Unity Day, which the State of Berlin will host as part of its Federal Council Presidency, will also focus on the common cause. We celebrate this festival of democracy and freedom together: ONLY WITH YOU.
