Rosenthaler Platz: see the sights – and party by night

Rest and relaxation is what the Circus Hotel is all about – and you’re sure to need it after a day (and night) spent at the heart of the action around Rosenthaler Platz. Right on the hotel’s doorstep, you’ll find bustling streets famous for unique shopping, international cuisine and a fantastic slice of Berlin nightlife. Other must-see attractions, like the arty neighbourhoods around Auguststraße and the iconic courtyards at Hackescher Markt, are just a short walk away.

Rosenthaler Platz is immersed in arts and culture. There are countless spots just a short walk away where you can check out an offbeat film or experimental theatre show. Just a short walk from the hotel, you’ll find experimental performance spaces like the Sophiensaele and Freies Theater, or a real-life circus performance at the Chamaeleon Theatre in the Hackesche Höfe courtyards. If you prefer the silver screen, check out the selection of subtitled films on offer at the Hackesche Höfe cinema, too.

If you’d like to relax with a little shopping between shows, there are plenty of independent shops around, too. Fashionistas will love nearby Ecoalf for sustainable style, while literary types will adore the range of cute little bookshops nearby – including ocelot on Brunnenstraße, complete with its own café where you can leaf through your purchases.

When the sun goes down, if you want to party on Rosenthaler Platz, you don’t even need to leave the hotel: its Lost My Voice bar is your first port of call to chill with an incredible cocktail in hand. On hot summer nights, head over to the roof terrace on the neighbouring AMANO Hotel, just 200 m away, to enjoy panoramic views of the city.

Wander between Torstraße and Auguststraße

Heading west from the Circus Hotel along Torstraße, you’ll uncover another fascinating part of Berlin’s historic city centre. A growing number of artists have settled in the area between Torstraße and Auguststraße in recent years, developing a burgeoning creative community with its own unique charm. Check out their work in the neighbourhood’s many small galleries, stop by enchanting little street cafés, or stroll and browse studios and workshops.

South of Auguststraße, the Heckmann-Höfe courtyards off Oranienburger Straße embody the classic Berlin ambiance, hidden away from the busy streets by atmospheric old buildings. Here you’ll find delightful little arts and crafts spots, including the Bonbonmacherei sweet factory. If you can’t get enough of Berlin’s unique courtyard vibes, less than 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel down Rosenthaler Straße you’ll find the Hackesche Höfe, which pack quirky restaurants, shops, theatres and cinemas into eight interconnected inner courtyards.

Sophienstraße

The street named after Prussian Queen Sophie Luise in the early 19th century is situated close to Hackescher Markt. Thanks to the building development with cottage industries and small businesses that has been largely preserved from the 18 century, Sophienstraße has the typical old charm of the suburb of Spandau. The entrances to the "Hackesche Höfe", the artistically designed "Sophie-Gips-Höfe" and the courtyard of the Sophienkirche (Church of Sophie) invite you to a trip into remote areas of Berlin old town.
