Industrial art depicts the transformation of nature through heavy industry. Although the factories and plants were visible to everyone, only selected artists were permitted into the factory halls – those caverns of the industrial age with their enormous furnaces, foundries and conveyor belts.

The figures depicted in industrial art are almost exclusively workers; men in suits are rarely shown. For it is not the elite, nor society, that drive the action, but solely technology interacting with natural elements: fire, wind and steam.

Viewers today also live in a largely uncontrolled, albeit digital, phase of industrialisation. Whilst our era produces a deluge of images, the age of heavy industry, however, gave rise to a brief yet powerful tradition of painting – a fireworks display of colours, light and shadow.
