Women artists in the GDR
Particularly since the 1970s, female artists have developed their own visual languages to explore themes such as physicality, vulnerability, desire and freedom. A particular focus is on the art of women in the GDR, who grappled with issues of identity and self-determination despite social and political restrictions. Photography, performance, film, painting and sculpture became important means of expression in this context.
Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the body remained a central theme – as an expression of personal and collective memories as well as social change.
The exhibition powerfully demonstrates how female artists conceive of the female body as a space for self-determination, reflection and artistic freedom.
