Since 2015, the Evangelical Cemetery Association of Berlin City Center has been presenting a permanent light installation by American light artist James Turrell (*1943), designed to align with the sunset, in the chapel at Dorotheenstädtischer Cemetery I.

James Turrell (b. 1943) is one of the most significant artists of our time. He devotes his entire body of work to exploring the diverse manifestations of natural and artificial light. He pushes the boundaries of perception. In his light spaces, architecture appears dematerialized, relieved of its weight, and visitors experience the presence of pure light firsthand.

Turrell’s work in the chapel at the Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof is specifically timed to coincide with sunset.

This permanent installation is the only publicly accessible work of art by Turrell in Berlin and can only be viewed during sunset hours.
