At the turn of the century, the European art world was in a state of upheaval. It was a time of searching for new forms of expression beyond visible reality. Through an intense dialogue between art and music, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) developed a radical synthesis of the arts.

As a composer, Čiurlionis conceived of the cosmos as a universal symphony, which he sought to give visual form to in his paintings. For him, nature, music and painting were not separate realms, but rather expressions of a holistic understanding of earthly and cosmic existence and meaning.

For the first time in over 35 years, his artistic oeuvre is once again on display in Germany and can also be experienced aurally alongside his musical compositions.

An exhibition by the Alte Nationalgalerie, in cooperation with the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, Kaunas, and made possible by the Friends of the Nationalgalerie.
