A Guided Tour of the Core Exhibition
The founding of Israel in 1948 marked a turning point for Jews all over the world. The Jewish community in Germany, in particular, felt a deep connection to the new state. Against this backdrop, one room in the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of relations between Germany and Israel and the significance of this relationship for all Jews living in Germany.

The challenges posed by this triangular dynamic – being a Jew in Germany and caught up in the fate of two states and their deeply fraught relationship – have come to the fore once again in the wake of 7 October 2023.
In this context, the guided tour through the permanent exhibition follows two lines of development: the principle of holiness in Diaspora Judaism, which is characterised by a simultaneous sense of closeness to and distance from the Land of Israel, and the emergence of Zionism as a Jewish national movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries in the face of modern racial anti-Semitism.
The guided tour concludes with a visit to *Shalechet*: the Israeli artist Menashe Kadishman dedicated his walk-through sculpture, comprising over 10,000 steel faces, to all the innocent victims of war and violence.
