Guided tour with Katharina Deppisch, research assistant, Architecture Collection, or Dominik Vukoja, research assistant, Architecture Collection.

Josef Kaiser (1910–1991) was one of the most influential architects of the GDR. Between 1950 and 1984, he played a key role in the design of numerous, predominantly prestigious state buildings. His modern designs along Berlin’s Karl-Marx-Allee, which were regarded as an expression of the GDR’s cultural identity, attracted international attention. Many of his buildings, including the iconic Kino International, are now listed as historic monuments. For the first time, the exhibition explores his life and work through drawings, collages, photographs, films and models, shedding light on political and aesthetic tensions. Contemporary perspectives offer new insights into his legacy as part of German-German architectural history.
