Clubs are cultural venues, subcultural biotopes, and safe havens. Clubs are temporary autonomous zones and places of escapism. They can break down social norms; they are ephemeral, physical, and communal. In clubs, people form relationships with one another and negotiate rules. People work in clubs. Clubs are both heterotopias and economic factors.
In recent years, awareness of club culture has shifted—not least due to the increasing threat to many clubs. Berlin’s techno culture has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage; club culture is the subject of academic research; and digital archives are emerging. This is where the presentation *Club Kultur Bestand Aufnahme* comes in.
The Berlin club Mensch Meier serves as an example and source of material for this purpose. Following its closure, Mensch Meier donated a collection to the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge for inclusion in its permanent collection. The resulting exhibition showcases various approaches to preserving club culture. At the same time, it sees itself as an attempt to translate this culture into the museum space.
At the heart of “Club Kultur Bestand Aufnahme” lies the question: Can club culture be collected, documented, and exhibited? And if so, how?
