Musical, grand opera, socially critical pamphlet, song recital

Musical, grand opera, socially critical pamphlet, recital, morning, noon, and night until the next day. For five or six theater madmen and a clever pianist.

A sperm whale is no small animal. 100 tons of oil, meat, and blubber—unfeasible for a regular theater production.

But theater people are inventive. That’s why a whole new venue was invented for the grand opera *Der Gesang des Pottwals*. Open-air, making it accessible even to marine mammals. Because without a sperm whale, there is no opera.

So an orchestra pit is dug behind the Deutsches Theater. An arena built under the stars. Verona. Melodies for millions. Choirs, extra choirs, additional choirs, fishermen’s choirs. The Merchant and Netrebko, at the very least!

Water basins and fountains on stage, fire, pyrotechnics, and 20 tons of German sewage sludge… what was that for again?

Heiner Bomhard is a director and composer. At the DT, he most recently starred in and served as the musical mastermind behind the two cult musicals Hitler’s Goat and the King’s Hemorrhoids as well as The Island of the Perverts.

With The Song of the Sperm Whale, Bomhard now moves into the serious opera genre. It will be tragic. And dramatic. And uplifting in all its creatureliness. Sperm whale’s word of honor.

And from the waves rises, mighty and powerful, a creature greater than all others. O world! How could you have created such a being!
