The permanent exhibition at the ZiLLEMUSEUM
The ZiLLEMUSEUM is located in the arcades of Propststraße, in the heart of the historic Nikolaiviertel. It commemorates the life and work of the painter, draftsman, and photographer Heinrich Zille (1859–1929), Berlin’s 80th honorary citizen.

Nikolaiviertel und Spreeufer
Zille, often referred to as “Pinselheinrich”—a nickname meant partly affectionately and partly critically—depicted in his works the everyday life and hardships of ordinary Berliners.
Through powerful images, photographs, and drawings, he held up a mirror to society and criticized the Wilhelmine zeitgeist, whose rapid industrialization and urbanization led to social impoverishment and ultimately culminated in two world wars.
The permanent exhibition “Life and Work” presents original drawings, sketches, and lithographs, as well as Zille’s rare photographs.
In the cinema room, the film “Det war Zille sein Milljöh” by Irmgard von zur Mühlen shows excerpts from Zille’s eventful life and surroundings.
