Museum Island, modern buildings, palaces and parks in Berlin
Only selected buildings are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List: they are of exceptional universal value and are significant for all of humanity.
Three historical ensembles in Berlin are of great supraregional importance according to UNESCO and have therefore been included on the list. In 1991, UNESCO added the palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin to the World Heritage List, followed in 1999 by Berlin's Museum Island with its five outstanding museum buildings and in 2008 by the Berlin Modernism Housing Estates .
The Berlin Modernist Housing Estates reflect the ideals of their era of modern living with air and light . Every three years, they are the focus of attention when the major, cross-city festival of building culture and modernist ideas, the Triennale of Modernism, is celebrated in Berlin, Dessau and Weimar.
