Plattenbauten

Fascinating high-rise blocks where you can go up and take a look inside.

When it comes to height, the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf is hard to beat: From the upper floors of the modernised prefabricated buildings, you will have a breathtaking view over Berlin and Brandenburg.

Skywalk Marzahn

Take a trip to the 21st floor of the apartment block at Raoul-Wallenberg-Straße 40/42 and climb up to the spectacular new "Skywalk" viewing platform. At a height of around 70 metres, the wind blows freshly towards you and the sphere of the television tower at Alexanderplatz glistens silvery in the distance. Those with a head for heights dare to climb onto the lattice balcony, which juts out a few metres above the slab façade into the void - and risk a look down between their own feet, directly onto the Marzahn promenade. Each visit, in sturdy footwear of course, is free of charge and is accompanied by a local Skywalk guide. The guided tours must be booked in advance and last one hour.

Cloud grove on the Kienberg

Since summer 2017, there has been a new highlight in the district. Take Berlin's only cable car to the Wolkenhain on the Kienberg. The new "Wolkenhain" viewing structure is enthroned like a cloud above the treetops of the Kienberg. The white cloud is not only visible from afar, but is also one of the highlights of the area around the Gardens of the World with its impressive views. It is also an impressive testimony to the art of engineering.

The spectacular structure consists of around 170 steel nodes that hold the struts of the cloud together. The cloud, which consists of a translucent membrane, rests on slender steel supports that are arranged irregularly, like the trunks in a grove of trees. At night, the cloud glows from within.

The "cloud grove" not only provides a comprehensive view of the Gardens of the World and the district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf from a height of around 120 metres above sea level. From here, you can see as far as the television tower in the centre of Berlin and, on the other side, far into Brandenburg. The ascent to the cloud is possible via stairs and barrier-free with a lift.

Cloud seven. Feasting with a panoramic view over Berlin

The Wolkenhain seems to float like a cloud above the Kienberg. After the ascent, the "Wolke Sieben" café is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. The integrated panorama restaurant at the foot of the cloud grove offers a breathtaking view of the Berlin skyline. So high up and yet down to earth, it serves changing daily specials, traditional specialities, homemade cakes, sandwiches and light snacks.

A cable car for Berlin

A real cable car runs across the grounds of the Gardens of the World in Berlin. Visitors to the gardens can experience everything from a bird's eye view. The barrier-free cabins ascend from the entrance at the "Kienbergpark - Gärten der Welt" underground station and travel up to the 102 metre high summit of the Kienberg to the Wolkenhain. After a stopover, the cable car descends to the main entrance at Blumberger Damm.

Museum flat WBS 70

The museum flat WBS 70 on the ground floor of Hellersdorfer Straße 179 offers a journey into the GDR past of prefabricated housing estates. The three-room flat from 1986 is just as unchanged as it was 30 years ago, as if the residents had just gone for a walk. Every piece of furniture here is original - from the radiator and light switches to the Chromat television, salt shaker and washing utensils. 42.000 WBS 70 flats were once built in Hellersdorf! Today, the flat is not only a magnet for visitors, but also a backdrop for film and photo productions. You can visit it on Sundays and by appointment.
