Berlin Wall Memorial in Berlin-Reinickendorf

80 metres of original Wall

Opposite Schönholz S-Bahn station in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf is a rediscovered section of the Berlin Wall. Although it is hard to miss, since the fall of the Wall it has only been recognised as a simple wall. An amateur researcher discovered the remnant and it has now been officially confirmed that it is indeed part of the former Berlin Wall.

This section was forgotten after reunification, as it was initially unclear which district it belonged to. Until 1988, the site was located in the district of Pankow, but after a border adjustment, the boundaries of the districts shifted and the remains of the Wall were assigned to the district of Reinickendorf.

The section of the Wall was built under GDR leadership in the 1960s. Due to a shortage of materials, an old property wall on Schützenstraße - the houses had been destroyed in the Second World War - became the Berlin Wall. The brick wall was later integrated into the barrier, raised and fitted with barbed wire.

Most parts of the early Wall were replaced by a second generation of barriers during the division of Berlin. These were then more massive. However, the section at Schönholz S-Bahn station has been preserved in its original form to this day.

The remains of the Wall in Reinickendorf are now a listed building and are fenced off to prevent damage to the Wall by so-called Wall woodpeckers.
