The group exhibition *Kreuzberg: Art and Migration since 1960* presents artistic perspectives on migration, work and life in the district where the Gropius Bau is also situated. The focus is on works by artists who came to West Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s on scholarships, to study, or for political, economic or family reasons.

Around 130 works – including new pieces by contemporary artists – explore key experiences of the so-called ‘guest workers’ and subsequent generations.

Through a selection of works, the curatorial tour traces how artists engage in different ways with migration and exile, experiences of racism, the housing crisis and the living conditions of so-called ‘guest workers’.

The works on display also tell stories of resistance and self-empowerment, solidarity and community, and present Kreuzberg as a space of artistic possibility.

Patrizia Dander is Deputy Curatorial Director of the Gropius Bau and co-curator of the exhibition ‘Kreuzberg: Art and Migration since 1960’.
