Just a few hundred metres from the Liebermann Villa on Lake Wannsee, an outbuilding of the Oppenheim Country House housed a branch of the Jugend-Alija School in the early 1940s, where young Jewish men and women were prepared for emigration to Palestine. The Hachshara movement is regarded as one of the most influential within Jewish self-help efforts prior to Nazi persecution, yet it remains largely unknown and unremembered today.

The term ‘Hachshara’ comes from Hebrew and is generally translated as ‘preparation’ or ‘training’.

You are warmly invited to a lecture by Judith Rinklebe, which will examine the history of the movement in Central and Eastern Europe from the 1920s to the 1940s. The focus will be on the various political currents as well as the people who shaped and helped to shape the movement. Afterwards, we look forward to discussing the topic with you.
