Jette Steckel has staged Klaus Mann’s anti-fascist novel *Mephisto* at the Münchner Kammerspiele and is currently working on Hans Fallada’s resistance novel *Every Man for Himself* at the DT – two literary works that, in different ways, tell the stories of people who stand their ground, conform or resist within an authoritarian system.
In her new book *This Urge for Harshness: On the New Fascism*, Eva von Redecker examines why authoritarian thinking is regaining strength today and what longing for harshness, order and power is expressed therein.
What links the fascism of the past with its contemporary forms? And what distinguishes it? How does a societal willingness to conform arise – and what drives people to resist? What role do fear, harshness and solidarity play when democratic certainties are shaken?
A conversation about fascism and resistance, about art and responsibility – and about the question of how a society can counter the urge for harshness.
