Book launch and discussion with the author

Russia has been waging war against Ukraine since 2014. Yet many Germans – in the east as well as in the west – still view the country in a surprisingly positive light. Why is this the case? And why are so many people here susceptible to Russian propaganda?

Gwendolyn Sasse seeks explanations and, in this book, takes her readers on a surprising journey through contemporary German perceptions of Russia. She offers unusual insights drawn from recent surveys, interviews and round-table discussions, featuring many illuminating soundbites from the general public. One thing becomes particularly clear: when Germans talk about Russia, they are primarily talking about themselves.

Gwendolyn Sasse is a political scientist and, amongst other roles, the academic director of the Centre for Eastern European and International Studies.

The event is taking place as part of the collaborative project ‘Knowledge between Books’.
