Music between longing and a new beginning
In the two psalm settings featured in this NoonSong, two worlds collide: in Sweelinck’s work, the austere Calvinist chorale set to a late-Renaissance polyphonic composition; in MacMillan’s, a resonant, passionate motet by a devout Catholic – and yet astonishing musical connections emerge. Perhaps it is the solemnity and contemplative nature of the ancient psalm texts that characterise these works?
