Robert Schumann’s Violin Concerto did not gain recognition until much later: although it was composed as early as 1853, it was not premiered until some 80 years later. Today, this long-underrated work, with its poetic and deeply felt musical language, ranks among the most fascinating concertos of the Romantic era. Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang will now perform it with the DSO.
Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra also had an eventful journey. The American composer revised the work several times, transforming it into a powerful orchestral piece full of contrasts, striking motifs, and surprising timbres.
Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony was composed during a period of personal turmoil and combines dreamy, folk-song-like, and dramatic elements. After an initially lukewarm reception at its premiere, the work evolved into one of Mahler’s most beloved symphonies—an emotional interplay between new beginnings, longing, and the abyss.
