Marilyn Monroe was born 100 years ago (1 June 1926) – a woman who became an icon of the 20th century. Rising from humble beginnings, she started out as a post-war pin-up girl and soon conquered Hollywood with her charm, wit and vulnerable strength.

Films such as *Some Like It Hot* made her the epitome of the American dream – beautiful, radiant and yet fragile. Her untimely, mysterious death in 1962 meant she never grew old, turning her into an eternal legend.

Marilyn Monroe remains a symbol of glamour, longing and the fleeting light of fame.

About the film: ‘The Misfits’ is regarded as Marilyn Monroe’s most challenging film, as it shows her for the first time in a profound, dramatic role without comedy or sex appeal.

The story, directed by John Huston and written by Arthur Miller, centres on the divorced dancer Roslyn (Monroe), who meets a group of outsiders in Reno – the cowboy Gay (Clark Gable), mechanic Guido (Eli Wallach) and rodeo rider Perce (Montgomery Clift) – and their plan to capture wild mustangs, which leads to moral dilemmas. Monroe’s development as an actress is evident here: she embodies vulnerable emotionality and inner turmoil, a far cry from her former pin-up girl image, demonstrating the results of her method acting training with Lee Strasberg. Highly acclaimed artistically, the film flopped commercially but nevertheless became a cult classic and was Monroe’s last completed film.
