Alejandra Morote Peralta

Alejandra Morote Peralta’s video installation *That Young Girl is in Love* explores in depth the construction and representation of romantic love.

To this end, it creates an intimate collage of fragments from various media, ranging from family archives to the pop culture of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Much of this material originates from Lima, the artist’s hometown. Song lyrics appear repeatedly throughout the video. They trace how idealised notions of love are expressed, consumed and internalised.

Visitors are invited to take a seat on a red garden chair facing the screen. The familiar, homely chair evokes the garden as a setting for family life, thereby immersing the audience in the spatial structures of intimacy.

On a pulsating loudspeaker stands a bowl of red jelly, which vibrates in time with a line from the video: ‘… desire makes you feel like jelly. That’s not wine, Rita, that’s blood.’ This line comes from the film *Choose Me* (1984) by Alan Rudolph, which Peralta’s grandparents had recorded on video whilst it was being broadcast on television – on the very same video cassette that also contains the family footage. In these various media fragments within the installation, love appears as something contagious. It enables the self to be reshaped.
