Dr Sven Haase, a provenance researcher at the Central Archive of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, and Dr Patrick Helber, curator for education and outreach at the Ethnological Museum, will report on their research and outreach projects, which explore the intersections between the Nazi era and colonialism.
They will then discuss the differences and similarities between provenance research and public engagement from a transhistorical perspective.
How can a fruitful interconnection be achieved within the respective disciplines? What needs to be borne in mind? What lessons can be learnt for the public debate from discussions surrounding colonial looted art? Which mistakes should not be repeated? What differences exist between the historical contexts, and how can or should these be conceptualised in a way that promotes democracy?
The discussion will be moderated by Dr Lilja-Ruben Çaharnas Vowe, a historian, political artist and cultural educator.
Art, Looting and Restitution – Forgotten Life Stories is a project by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Dresden State Art Collections in cooperation with the German Centre for Lost Cultural Property. It is funded as part of the federal programme ‘Demokratie leben!’ by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, as well as by the Friede Springer Foundation.
