shared research day

The project centres on objects of historical and personal value – artefacts from the past that bear witness to the stories of their owners and the experiences they have lived through. We use the séance as a method to engage with history in a non-linear way.

As part of our second research residency at *ausland*, we are inviting visitors and participants to a joint research day on 24 October.

  • 3.30 pm: Tactile guided tour / audio description / introduction
  • 4.00 pm: Gathering and start

The day combines a review of objects and transcripts from previous séances with the opportunity to explore new territory together.

Visitors are invited to bring their own objects that carry stories of imperial violence, displacement and loss. Together, everyone will select an object, conduct a séance and then reflect on and explore what emerged during the session.

  • Interested visitors are welcome to send, in advance – ideally 1 to 2 weeks before 24 October – photographs of the objects they intend to bring, along with information on their background and their respective owners or custodians, to *boundwiththeliving@gmail.com*.

Using objects marked by violence, displacement and loss, participants engage with their ancestors and historical ruptures. These objects preserve traces of previously untold ways of life under imperial violence and give a voice to potential stories characterised by the possibility of healing or redress.

The project is constantly evolving – through a continuous influx of new objects, materials and encounters. Rather than reconstructing a fixed past, the project explores relationships with a history that remains fragmentary and unresolved – and thus eludes linear narration or authoritative interpretation.

The aim is to create situations in which engaging with history becomes a collective practice and a physically tangible experience. It is not about finding answers, but about opening up a space for questions, contradictions and a form of knowledge that can only ever be fragmentary.
