SomoS Arts presents ‘Scaffold’, a performance by artist-in-residence Junghwan Cho and composer Hameed Al Saeed.

Cho will draw with charcoal on paper spread across the gallery floor like a stream, whilst Al Saeed improvises electronic music. The performance explores the everyday stresses of city life, drawing on processes of construction, erosion and fragmentation in both drawing and sound.

“For me, making art is a way of paying attention to the city, the body and the relationship between the two,” explains Cho.

His interest in urban space is shaped by his architecture studies and his experiences of Busan’s rapid urban transformation. High-rise residential blocks and ongoing construction work have altered familiar places.

This led him to reflect on how such changes influence memory and behaviour. He aims to make the physical and emotional impact of urban spaces tangible and to encourage the audience to become aware of their own reactions to their everyday surroundings.

Cho and Al Saeed respond to one another during the performance. Their reactions determine the pace of the performance and create tension between drawing and music.

  • Junghwan Cho’s artist residency at SomoS is supported by the Busan Cultural Foundation.
