Dr. Janina Nentwig (Berlinische Galerie) with Dr. Sven Haase (Provenance Research, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin)

Hardly any other museum holds more paintings by Lovis Corinth than the Berlin National Gallery. Today, its collection comprises 23 works. Eight of these are on loan and on display in the special exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie.

The guided tour led by Sven Haase, a provenance researcher at the Central Archive of the Berlin State Museums, focuses on the eventful histories behind these paintings: in 1933, the museum owned 15 paintings by the artist. During the Nazi era, the painter’s expressive, late works in particular were denounced as ‘degenerate’ and confiscated from German museums, including the National Gallery. The division of Germany after the Second World War also meant a division of the National Gallery. Both institutions in East and West Berlin endeavoured, in very different ways, to fill the gaps once more.
