This series of lectures focuses on the art of drawing and painting in the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries, an era of profound political, religious and social upheaval. Drawing was far more than merely a preparatory study: it served as a means of generating ideas and artistic experimentation.

The focus is on artists such as Rubens, Jordaens and van Dyck, whose drawings offer a direct insight into the creation of their works. A comparison with the art of the Northern Netherlands opens up new perspectives on drawing practice and the processes of image creation.
