Featuring Judith Geffert and a discussion with eyewitnesses

“Lesbians in the provinces are on their own. Utterly alone”: It was with this observation that Christiane Kloweit and Ina Röder Sissoko set out in 1989 to investigate the realities of life for lesbians in small towns across the GDR. Their findings were presented at the first lesbian conference in the GDR, held in Halle.

Judith Geffert sheds light on the history of this conference, held in the autumn of 1989 amidst political upheaval, its significance for the visibility of lesbian life, and draws parallels with the situation of lesbians outside major cities today.
