On the rocky road of history

Science fiction in the GDR often served as a niche in which different things were told and imagined, and which attracted less attention from the censors. The present was concealed within the future; at the same time, science fiction adopted a kind of external perspective on GDR society.

The country was described and further developed; grievances were (veiledly) highlighted, whilst the narrative depicted a society that had overcome precisely those very grievances.

How did GDR science fiction envisage the future, what view of humanity was portrayed, and what became of it after reunification? Which ideas endured?
