Pieter Pietersz.’s early Northern Dutch group portrait of the Amsterdam publishing family, the Laurens Jacobsz. family (c. 1590), combines Reformed piety with bourgeois self-representation.

However, it is not the family’s actual residence but an idealised setting that serves as the backdrop for instruction, Bible reading and writing exercises, as well as exemplary homemaking.

Speakers:

Dr Stephan Kemperdick, Gemäldegalerie Berlin, and Prof. Dr Johann Hinrich Claussen, Humboldt University of Berlin

The interdisciplinary series of events ‘Christian Art Appreciation’ generally takes place once a month – except during the summer break – and is a collaboration between the St. Matthäus Foundation and the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

In line with the liturgical calendar, selected works of art are discussed by an art historian and a theologian and opened up for discussion.

  • Admission is free. No registration required.
  • ‘Christian Art Appreciation’ takes place in the lecture theatre at the Kulturforum.
