On enemy stereotypes, failures of the justice system and a crime against humanity

In keeping with our theme for the year, ‘The Power of Women’, we are focusing on the witch-hunts. From 1617 onwards, numerous people in Bernau – mainly women – were accused of witchcraft. One of them was 70-year-old Dorothea Meermann, who, despite repeated torture, denied being a witch right up until her death.

Drawing on historical research and true stories, Alina Gause and Carl Martin Spengler recount a time when narratives carried more weight than facts – and the story feels surprisingly relevant today.
