Lorena Izquierdo / Matthias Koole / Mizuki Ishikawa
Over the years, they have all developed remarkable forms of artistic expression, but have often taken a back seat in favour of their work as organisers. Frictive Frequencies now brings the artistic side of these organisers to the fore, thereby giving something back to this scene. The invited guests present their own unique sonic languages and share their experiences of artistic and organisational practice in short talks.
Mizuki Ishikawa is one of the most sought-after sound artists and improvisers in both Berlin’s real-time music scene and its DIY experimental scene. She is regarded as an established and reliable pillar of these communities, as well as a committed organiser and generous collaborator. Ishikawa uses small, rather spartan set-ups comprising homemade electronics, various objects and feedback loops. Through small, sometimes unpredictable, yet always determined actions, she reminds the audience of the spatial situation and the context in which they find themselves.
Lorena Izquierdo, singer, performer, poet and curator, works at the intersection of experimental music, performance art and philosophy. The artist, who hails from Valencia and lives in Berlin, has spent almost a decade building bridges between the avant-garde DIY scenes of both cities. Expect action poetry, an art form that Izquierdo describes as ‘the splendour of monstrous, unshakeable restraint’.
Matthias Koole manipulates the guitar using extended playing techniques and unconventional objects to create dense textures. Expect bows, balloons, drumsticks and bespoke capos, no-input routing or even the reverberation of water from field recordings. Any hope of chord progressions or predictable harmonies should be left at the cloakroom. Koole organises concert series, festivals and record labels on a large scale – in Brazil and Germany.
Supported by Musikfonds e.V. with project funding from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
