frau anders was the only lesbian magazine in the GDR, or East Germany, and was published from 1989 to 1993. Articles, short stories, interviews and letters from readers paint a comprehensive picture of the realities of lesbian life in East Germany at that time.
The lecture focuses on articles from frau anders that shed light on the first changes in the GDR in 1989/90, the relationship between the East and West German lesbian movements, the self-image of East German lesbians, perspectives on ‘German reunification’, and reactions to right-wing violence in the early 1990s.
Paula Kreutzmann studied cultural studies and gender studies. The talk is based on her master’s thesis of the same name. She is a PhD student at the University of Leipzig and volunteers at MONAliesA – Feminist Library and Archive. In her doctoral research, she is examining queer movements of the 1990s in East Germany and Berlin.
