Which authors, and for what reasons, choose which language to write in (that of their country of origin, their new home, or a third?) or do they combine several languages? To form a hybrid language? What stance do authors take with regard to national literature? Are they outsiders, or do they manage to write their way straight into the heart of literature?


Juana Adcock is a Mexican author living in Scotland who explores the poetic possibilities of Spanglish in her writing.

Elicura Chihuailaf is a Chilean poet who incorporates myths and songs from indigenous culture into his works. Mário Gomes writes across major and minority languages such as German, Portuguese and Galician.
