Taking as his starting point a consideration of the figures in Luca Giordano’s *St Michael*, Dieter Wenk invites us to reflect on the rules of decorum – that is, the avoidance of depicting extremes, such as passions or pain, in the visual arts. Lessing’s reflections on the spatial and temporal arts in his *Laocoon* prove helpful in this regard.
