Working Group: Museums and Inclusion

At Haus Bastian, experts from the fields of museums and inclusion come together to exchange ideas. The aim is to learn from one another, forge connections and try out practical ideas together. Together, they explore inclusive educational work in museums.

The Museum and Inclusion Working Group has been led by Emanuele Valariano since May 2025.

The organisers warmly invite you to the new thematic block on ‘Intersectionality’. They aim to develop new perspectives on inclusion within the context of museums, exhibitions and cultural institutions.

  • The Butterfly Effect – Culture, Solidarity and Collective Redistribution

A discussion on museums as spaces of social engagement and solidarity:

How can cultural participation be shaped for disadvantaged children and young people? What opportunities are currently available, and to what extent does barrier-free and equitable access to art and culture later translate into opportunities in the labour market? Does the cultural sector still have a problem with classism, and if so, which initiatives, projects and practices are opening up new forms of participation, solidarity and collective shaping?

Nicky Böhm is the director of Hejmo and deputy chair of lilipad, two Berlin-based non-profit organisations that create spaces for interaction, cultural participation and self-empowerment for migrant and refugee communities. In her work, she places particular emphasis on low-threshold, creative storytelling formats that promote networking, education and cultural exchange.
