An experimental exhibition exploring the history of democracy and the present day
STIMMEN is a multimedia exhibition on the history of democracy, the present day and participatory democracy. It brings together personal perspectives on the history of the cemetery and the revolutions of 1848 and 1918. These perspectives come from various people who have volunteered their time to explore the subject.

The contributions are correspondingly diverse: ranging from quotations from historical novels and revolutionary demands, through the cemetery’s connection to the history of the women’s movement, to the history of the black, red and gold colours.
Other contributions explore access to democracy and personal experiences, or, in the form of eco-fiction, give a voice to an oak tree. The contributions combine historical sources with personal perspectives.
The exhibition was created as part of the participatory project ‘Demokratiegeschichte(n)’ [Stories of Democratic History], funded by the Foundation for Sites of German Democratic History.
Over several months, volunteers, with the support of historians from forum 1848, discussed, researched and developed their own contributions. The result is an exhibition that deliberately avoids telling a single, uniform story, instead bringing together a variety of voices.
The Cemetery of the March Martyrs is not merely a setting for the exhibition, but an integral part of it. Since 1848, it has served as a memorial to those who fought for political rights and freedom.
